Our Guide to International Carry-on Luggage

There’s nothing more exciting than planning a trip overseas. Anticipating the new cuisine, adventure and people to meet is all part of the travel experience.

When it's time to pack your suitcase, consider also bringing a carry-on bag; this is a great way to maximise the number of items you can transport, and helps create extra space in your checked luggage for any extra gifts or souvenirs you pick up along the way. In this article, we’re sharing our tips and recommendations for international carry-on luggage, what you can and can’t bring, and the best bags to bring with you on the plane.

How Does International and Domestic Carry-On Differ?

The main differences between domestic and international carry-on relate to the size, amount of bags and the contents.

In Australia, depending upon the airline, you will usually be allowed to bring two pieces of carry-on luggage - a larger item that can fit under the seat in front or in the overhead locker, and a smaller personal bag or item.

International airlines will have their own specifications regarding carry-on luggage size and how many bags you can bring. International carry-on is also incredibly restrictive on the contents, including food, liquids and organic material.

Our Top Bag Picks for International Carry-On

When deciding on a carry-on case, it’s best to choose the style that will best suit your choice of transport, destination and ease of use while abroad. Below, we’ve listed our favourite carry-on bags that will make every adventure overseas a breeze.

1. Carry-On Suitcase

A carry-on suitcase is a great way to maximise your carry-on allowance in an efficient and stylish way. With the freedom to pack essential items in a carry-on, you can easily access important documents, electronics, medications, and a change of clothes, providing comfort and peace of mind during the flight. Having a compact, lightweight carry-on from industry-leading brands like nere, American Tourister or Samsonite allows for easy maneuverability in crowded airports, busy streets, and tight spaces on the plane, thereby minimising physical strain and maximising mobility.

2. Large Zip Tote

For a stylish option you can use while on the plane and once you get to your destination, a large zip tote offers maximum versatility as a carry-on bag. The spacious design allows ample storage capacity, meaning you can pack various items, including clothing, electronics, books, and personal necessities. Along with this, the zip closure provides enhanced security, ensuring that belongings are well-protected throughout the journey, whether under the seat in front or in the overhead locker. Once you’ve arrived at your destination, a tote bag can be placed on top of your suitcase as you navigate the airport, helping keep your hands free.

3. Large Backpack

A large backpack is a great way to maximise space while staying hands-free as you navigate your destination. The large capacity of a backpack means you can efficiently bring all your essential items, such as clothing, toiletries, electronics, and personal belongings, onboard. This is especially beneficial for longer trips requiring specific equipment or gear. Backpacks also have multiple compartments and pockets that offer excellent organisation options, making it easy to access items on the go. With adjustable straps and padded support, it distributes the weight evenly across the shoulders and back, reducing strain and allowing for easy mobility in crowded airports or busy streets.
